SUPPORT
THE LEAGUE
For 83 years, the League of Women Voters of New Jersey (LWVNJ) has
striven to make democracy work through its voter service and education
projects. Making informed choices requires free and open access
to nonpartisan information.
The League's nonpartisan stance and impartial research give it a unique
role in the public arena. Education Fund publications and this Web site
provide impartial background information on topics ranging from government,
education, natural resources, social policy, women's rights, and much
more.
Projects like this take considerable research and effort. Your support
will help further our mission to educate the public on important issues
of the day.
How the League is Funded
ANNUAL GIFTS
The most important sources of support for the League of Women Voters of
New Jersey are unrestricted gifts made by individuals and businesses.
These annual/semi-annual gitfs are applied to underwrite our member
services, office costs, and daily operating expenses.
The League Leadership Circle acknowledges those
who make a significant donation to the League of Women Voters of New
Jersey. To those "leaders" who donated $500 or more to
the League (either NJ or EF or total combined) in the last two fiscal
years-- Thank You!

GIFTS OF STOCK
Donating stock (the actual shares, not the proceeds of your sale of
shares) can be the most tax-effective way of making a gift to the League
of Women Voters of New Jersey's Education Fund. In most cases, the capital
gains tax can be avoided and you get a tax credit for the full current
value of your contribution to our 501(c)(3) Education Fund's account
at Merrill Lynch. So even if those old stocks are worth a lot more than
when you bought them, you won't have to pay capital gains taxes when
you transfer them to the League. You can transfer the stocks electronically,
or as actual paper. The electronic method is faster and simpler, but
generally requires a broker. Shortly after receipt of the transferred
stocks by the LWVNJEF, Merrill-Lynch will sell them and invest the proceeds
in short-term safe investments.
|
If you'd like to make an unrestricted stock donation
to the LWVNJEF, please send us an e-mail for more information. We'd be pleased to accept whatever amount
you would like to contribute towards the activities of the League.
|
Our Merrill-Lynch account
can also accept stock gifts pledged for the Building Capital Campaign.
If you wish to make a pledge to that campaign with appreciated
stock, please indicate that in your e-mail.

PLANNED GIVING The League of the Future begins with you. Charitable gifts made in a person's
will are otherwise known as "Bequests" or are sometimes called
"Estate Gifts." By any name, a bequest provides a gift for
a charitable organization from your estate (the sum of your tangible
possessions). This gift is usually made in the form of cash (after your
executor converts tangible property through sale), although a bequest
of tangible property, such as a house or marketable securities, can
be made as well. The most direct approach is to name the "League of Women Voters of
New Jersey" as a beneficiary in your will. The language used can
be very straightforward, listing the LWVNJ as a beneficiary. We suggest
framing the provision generally to enable us to use the gift in the
area of greatest need (e.g., "for general uses and purposes").
You can specify a set amount to be directed to the LWVNJ by the executor,
or you can specify a set percentage of the residual estate (that which
is left after expenses and other special gifts are met, usually divided
among several beneficiaries). See the Sample Wording we provide. This guidance is basic in nature and is
not meant as a substitute for planning with an estate lawyer or other
financial advisors.
