Annual Program Calendar for Local Leaguesto assist you in planning your local "League year"
September: Kickoff, Back to the League. Interesting local focus, dinner/luncheon, new or prospective members invited. Local Leagues, who have produced a member-oriented program, please contact the state office a.s.a.p. for distribution in next State Board Report. October: Candidate forums. Discussion of ballot questions. Leagues looking for a public education program can use the LWVUS material. November: Campaign finance reform (while people are thinking about how bad the election was!). December: NJ education issues -- school financing and construction or a report on charter schools. January: LWVNJ Program Planning (Could also be in December) February: Programming about current studies at the US or NJ level. March: Women's history month. Child support issues. April: Spring is here -- good time for Natural Resources topic: water use, aquifers, Watershed non-point source pollution have long been an interest of the state natural resources committee. The issue of sprawl, land-use, and open space are all relevant. May: Annual meeting. See our Tips for a Successful Annual Meeting. Note: Remember that local Leagues can always undertake a "local" study. Should your county or town change its form of government? Should that proposed waste disposal unit be constructed? Should the town use certain lands for low-income housing? Or you can do a "project" like a needs assessment (child care in your community? domestic violence services? open space?), civics education such as Running and Winning (ask the LWV of Camden County or Millburn/Short Hills), efforts like Middletown's "High School civic project", or Kids Voting NJ. |
