What is the League?
- The League of Women Voters is a nonprofit, nonpartisan political organization, dedicated to promoting political responsibility through informed and active participation in government.
- The League does not support any candidate or party, but it does take stands on issues after study.
- Full, voting membership is open to citizens age 18 or older -- both men and women are welcome. Non-citizens and younger people can be associate members.
- The League operates at local, state and national levels. There are 39 local leagues in New Jersey.
Our Mission
The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
History
The League of Women Voters is an outgrowth of the National Suffrage Association. It was founded in 1920 upon the ratification of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote. Our main activities include getting out an informed vote, furnishing the public with information on issues, and working for legislation in the public interest.
Camden County League
- The Camden County League is the result of a merger of two local Leagues in the 1960's. As a county League, it serves all the people of camden County.

What does the League do in New Jersey?
- Educates citizens on issues, legislation and candidates.
- Conducts in-depth and objective analysis of issues.
- Lobbies and testifies on issues it has studied.
- Provides services to voters throughout the state.
- Trains and develops leaders.
What has the Camden County League done recently?
- Registered hundreds of voters, many at bi-monthly naturalization ceremonies.
- Moderated candidate forums for numerous school board and municipal elections.
- Responded to numerous phone calls from citizens to our League Line (856-795-7878), giving them information or making referrals.
- Responded to numerous e-mails to our e-mail account, lwvcc@hotmail.com
- Sponsored a public forum featuring Zach Stalberg from Philadelphia's Committee of 70.
- Conducted Running & Winning, a leadership workshop for high school junior and senior girls.
- Published and distributed the Camden County Guide to Elections and Government to voters, schools, libraries, civic organizations, and all 37 municipalities in the county, as well as online.
- Published a monthly newsletter, The Voter, informing members and citizens about federal and state legislation and public policy issues.
- Particilated in a national League consensus on the "National Popular Vote Compact".
- Wrote and called state and national legislators to advocate League positions on issues such as New Jersey property tax reform and campaign finance legislation, both state and national.
Nonpartisan Interests
The League is a nonpartisan organization. Its interest is only in the field of government. It does not support or oppose candidates or political parties, but members are encouraged to work as individuals in the political party of their choice. To protect the nonpartisanship of the League, Board members do not work actively in their parties while serving on the Board.
