Jan 28, 2012 LWVUS Action - Combat Super PACS -- Appoint New FEC Members
Already in this important election year, new Super PACs are flooding elections with huge expenditures from million-dollar donors. Because they are supposedly “independent” from the candidates, and with new loopholes from the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, Super PACs can raise and spend unlimited amounts from corporations and individuals, and they can do so with limited disclosure. While there are different avenues that can be taken to fight back against Citizens United and cut the influence of special interests, you can join us by taking the first step today by urging President Obama to appoint new commissioners to the FEC. Among other duties, the FEC can define what election efforts are “independent” from the candidates.

Despite what the opposition would have you believe, clean air standards are not a government overregulation and they’re not taking away jobs. Clean air standards DO prevent thousands of illnesses, asthma related hospital visits, and even deaths every year. Two specific bills have come up that would hurt efforts to clean the air. Both reduce regulations, one on incinerators. Bad idea! Click here for more information and to take action.Sept 28, 2011 LWVNJ Action - Reform Charter Schools
New Jersey Senate President Stephen Sweeney has agreed to bring the two charter reform bills that LWVNJ supports to the Senate Education Committee. Now we need your help to make sure that the Senate Education Committee approves these critical reforms so the full Senate can vote on them. We need calls or emails to three specific Senators. The House of Representatives is expected to consider legislation that would permanently block the EPA from regulating harmful carbon pollution. For decades, the EPA has protected the health of children, seniors and all the rest of us from dangerous pollutants through the Clean Air Act. In just the last twenty years carbon monoxide, which negatively affects those with heart and lung diseases, has been cut by seventy percent. But now, special interests and their congressional allies are pushing to undo the Clean Air Act.
Take action now to tell your Representative to oppose any legislation that would block or prevent action to clean up our air and protect the most vulnerable Americans by following this link.Feb 1, 2011. LWVNJ Advocacy Update - Still worth reading!

The House of Representatives voted to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act.The repeal will probably not pass the Senate, and would be vetoed if it did. The LWVUS still encourages you to call your Senator and oppose repeal (Feb 2, 2011). Read a League letter to the Senate here (pdf file). It’s now critical that you weigh in, too, and tell your Senators to oppose repeal of the Affordable Care Act. As provisions of the Act are being implemented, more and more Americans are getting health care coverage while health care costs are reduced for individuals, businesses and communities. Please also encourage your family, friends and coworkers to join in this urgent effort. Visit this link to take action.
Jan 23, 2011. LWVUS Action -- Retain the Presidential Campaign Finance System!
At this time, the House is set to repeal the Presidential Campaign Finance System. “American people deserve better,” says League of Women Voters. The League of Women Voters today (Jan 26, 2011) urged members of the U.S. House of Representatives to oppose the move expected this week to eliminate the public financing system for presidential elections.
Pointing to the lack of hearings or other committee action on the legislation to repeal the presidential system, Elisabeth MacNamara, president of the nonpartisan citizens’ organization said, “The rush to the floor, without following the normal procedures of the House, is deeply disturbing. The American people deserve better than this.”

On Friday, July 23, Governor Christie vetoed S-2139, a bill that would have restored 7.5 million dollars to family planning services. New Jersey's family planning agencies provide reproductive and other health care services to over 136,000 women and men. Please stand with these people and the League of Women Voters of New Jersey by taking action today to call SIX SPECIFIC SENATORS to override the Governor's veto of S-2139. Thank you! Click here for details.
Update: Update not overridden. The fight for women's health continues!July 22, 2010. LWVUS Action on election transparency.
Voters or dollars: who decides? The DISCLOSE Act is expected to come up for a vote very soon -- and your Senators could cast the deciding votes. Contact your Senators today: Tell them to help prevent the 2010 elections from being swamped with secret corporate and union money. Click here for details.
Update: The Senate was unable to override filibuster attempts. The bill died when the new Congress took over. It would have to be reintroduced and passed in both houses, which seems unlikely. The battle to fight corporate control of elections continues.
