Testimony in support of S 1255Senate Community and Urban Affairs MeetingMay 30, 2002by Sandra Matsen, PresidentThe League of Women Voters believes that democratic government depends upon the informed and active participation of its citizens at all levels of government. Citizen participation usually begins at the local level, where government and elected leaders are closest to citizens. Open meetings without the right to speak on issues of concern to citizens stifles participation. Every municipal governing body must set aside a public comment period at its regular meetings. This access is critical to our democracy. S 1255 and A 332 assure citizens of the right to speak and give discretion to the governing body to set the length of time for public comments. It sends a clear message to citizens that their participation is valued. The League of Women Voters of New Jersey asks you to release the bill to the full Senate. |
