Letter to the New York Times Editor

Re "Shops vs. Swamps in the Meadowlands" (New York Times article, Dec. 18): The Meadowlands Mills project, a proposed $1 billion retail, entertainment and office complex in Carlstadt, N.J., is not appropriate for this wetlands site, and is in direct violation of the Clean Water Act. The project is not dependent on being near water, and this is not the only feasible site for it.

The developers say they have spent $40 million on development rights, but they could have spent much less if they had agreed to put the project in one of New Jersey's urban areas, as my organization has long urged in public testimony. We do not need this project on 200 acres of wetlands in this congested area.

President, League of Women Voters of New Jersey
