Testimony on S.2045

Senate Law and Public Safety Committee

May 11, 2000

Presented by Sandra Martinez, LWVNJ

The League of Women Voters of New Jersey supports S.2045 and urges you to forward it to the Senate floor for passage. The League of Women Voters supports regulating firearms for consumer safety. S.2045, requiring personalized technology on handguns sold within three years of the Attorney General reporting such a model is available for retail sale purposes, is a reasonable step in regulating handguns for consumer safety. An unauthorized user cannot fire a personalized handgun. Such technology automatically "locks" a handgun, providing the best safety measures. This bill does not infringe upon the rights of adults to own handguns; it simply requires them when purchasing new handguns to buy ones with this technology.

Preventing future handguns from being fired by any unauthorized user—whether an inquisitive child, a troubled young adult or a criminal with a stolen gun—deserves your support.
